For anyone planning to take part in EORCA’s Althea Gibson Open Tennis Tournament (August 16-17), this article will provide more information on registration, tournament rules, format, and more!
EAST ORANGE RECREATION / ALTHEA GIBSON OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT
- Dates: August 16 & 17 from 11am to 3pm
- Locations: Elmwood Park (Day 1) and Soverel Park (Day 2)
- Rate Date: August 15 from 5-9pm
- Last resort if need for weather or overflow
- Divisions
- Youth: ages 8-17
- Adults: ages 18 and up
- Registration Information
- Costs: $15 Youth | $30 Adult

Registration Deadline: August 10 (draws will be announced this week)
DIVISIONS, DRAWS AND RANKINGS
We have divisions for all ages and skill levels. Each division is single elimination.
Youth Divisions
- Youth Beginners (Ages 8–16): for players with little or no match experience
- Youth Intermediate (NTRP between 3.0–3.5, Ages 8–16): for players who can sustain rallies and play full matches
Adult Divisions
- Adult Beginners (18 and up): adults new to tennis or with limited match play
- Under 30 Adults (Advanced up to NTRP 4.0): competitive adults under 30
- Under 40 Adults (Advanced up to NTRP 4.0): competitive adults under 40)
- Under 50 Adults (Advanced up to NTRP 4.0): competitive adults under 50)
- 50 & Above Adults (Advanced up to NTRP 4.0): competitive adults under 50)
NTRP Rating System
The NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is a standard used by the USTA to rate player ability.
- Beginner (1.0–2.5): Just learning, limited rally & match experience.
- Intermediate (3.0–3.5): Can sustain rallies, understand strategy, play matches.
- Advanced (4.0): Consistent, controlled shots, good placement, and competitive play.

Beginners: Youth & Adult
- Short set: 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
- Semifinals: Short set, 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
- Finals: Short set, 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
Advanced: Youth
- Youth Short set: 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
- Semifinals: Short set, 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
- Finals: Short set, 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
Advanced: Adult
- Short set: 1st to 4 games, no-ad scoring
- Semifinals: Regular set, no-ad scoring.
